    Hair: More Than Just a Head Full

    For holistic medical practitioners, determining the Œrootı of certain medical conditions can often be a process of elimination and evaluation. Canada, unlike the United States, has a limited number of diagnostic tests available to determine nutritional status. Often a practitioner must send blood, urine and stool tests to the US in order to get the information required to properly evaluate a patientıs health status.

    If a physician wants a test to determine whether or not you have a bacterial infection, this is simple, but a test to determine your selenium level is not. One test that can provide such information is a hair analysis. Hair analysis, which is a non-invasive test, is a good screening method to determine heavy metal toxicity, digestion and absorption inadequacies, and hair mineral levels. The results from a hair analysis can provide your practitioner with some important baseline information to evaluate your nutritional status and decide on a treatment plan.

    Most hair analysis labs provide readings on possible environmental toxins. Approximately fifteen toxic elements should be tested for including: aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, bismuth, cadmium, lead, mercury, nickel, silver, thallium, tin, uranium and titanium. The analysis should also provide readings for the following minerals: calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, manganese, chromium, cobalt, molybdenum, boron, iodine, lithium, rubidium, selenium, strontium, sulfur, vanadium, potassium, phosphorus and sodium. The results you receive should also provide a commentary on the probability of contamination, sources of the toxic elements and possible health risks.

    Interpreting a hair analysis can be tricky. Even I, as a trained hair analysis interpreter, overlooked a certain health problem. Over the past two years I have tested my hair seven times. Each test result pointed to the same thing‹that I have low stomach acid. I doubted these results. It wasnıt until I confirmed the results with a test called a tubeless pH gastric analysis, a definitive test for stomach acid, that I was convinced. Stomach acid is required for the absorption of calcium, magnesium, copper, zinc, manganese, molybdenum and vanadium. I was low in many of these minerals, although I was taking all of them in a food supplement. As a result of low stomach acid I was not absorbing them. The hair analysis was correct and I was able to treat my digestive problem.

    Hair analysis provides good information to an educated interpreter for most nutrient elements. It can help uncover possible health patterns and suggest areas that need nutritional supplementation. Letıs look at some of the most important elements tested, reasons for toxicity and deficiencies the test results point out.

    Lead Toxicity
    We live in a polluted world and one of the most toxic and common metals we are exposed to is lead. Even small amounts of lead can cause poisoning. Lead poisoning leads to a lower IQ and a host of medical problems. The primary sources for lead poisoning are leaded paint, leaded pottery or lead plumbing. Hair analysis provides a good test for lead poisoning. However, it may not show lead poisoning that resulted from exposure twenty years ago. The reason for this is because lead is a ³bone seeker.² Hair analysis will provide evidence of exposure in the past three months. The time it takes to grow enough hair for the analysis. Lead is not the only toxin, others are effectively screened for as well in a hair analysis.

    Health Conditions and Your Hair
    Hair analysis can also help screen for many disease indications. If you suffer from hypertension, dyslexia and painful muscles, these may be due to cadmium poisoning. Cigarettes are commonly a source of cadmium in hair. Most smokers have very high levels of cadmium. Stop smoking or avoid exposure to second-hand cigarette smoke.

    Perhaps your fibromyalgia is from aluminum poisoning. Hair will also show this toxic metal. A cause for chronic fatigue is often difficult to locate. Elevated uranium in the hair analysis can help unravel the mystery. Depression and poor memory can be due to poisoning from mercury amalgams and/or the ingestion of mercury-contaminated fish. Low levels of mercury may show up in the hair test but severe mercury poisoning is not well reflected by hair analysis.

    If you have a strong family history of cancer you will want to pay special attention to the selenium level results stated in the hair analysis. It is one mineral that is accurately depicted in hair analysis results. If the analysis finds you have low selenium levels this puts you at a high risk for cancer. Your doctor would definitely recommend a selenium supplement. Hair analysis will also give an accurate level of chromium. Low chromium is associated with a high risk for diabetes. If low levels are evident then chromium supplementation is indicated.

    These are only a few of the elements screened for in a hair analysis but it gives you an idea of the benefits of doing an analysis. Also, if it is found that you are heavy metal toxic, certain treatments such as chelation therapy can be used to lower your toxic load. Hair analysis is not a perfect screening tool. Some minerals are almost meaningless in hair analysis. For example, iron is best measured using a blood test called a serum ferritin.

    Hair May Be Contaminated
    Shampoos, hair dyes, perm solutions and hair sprays can contaminate the hair sample leading to false elevations of minerals such as aluminum, cadmium, nickel, silver and titanium. To obtain an accurate hair analysis you must wash your hair with only the shampoo recommended by the testing laboratory for at least one month. The laboratory that my clinic uses recommends Johnsonıs baby shampoo.

    The hair sample sent to the lab must be taken with a pair of scissors from the nape of the neck. New growth is preferable. Only about 25 g of hair sample is needed for the analysis.

    Certain groups of people cannot derive much benefit from this analysis, eg, individuals without hair and people who work in very contaminated work places, such as metal working shops. The hair of the latter group is full of toxic metals so as to make interpretation difficult. Pubic hair can sometimes be used but the accuracy is considerably less than for head hair.
